Dr Ian Oppermann, Director of the Connectivity Innovation Network since 2021, has been appointed as a Commissioner of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) for a five-year term.

Ian’s appointment is a well-deserved recognition of what many of us have long known: his expertise in data, technology and digital policy is exceptional. As he steps into this role, helping shape competition and consumer protection in an increasingly digital economy, we’re incredibly proud.

During his four years leading CIN, Ian brought far more than deep expertise. He brought energy, curiosity and a genuine passion for connecting people and ideas. He helped us grow our network, challenged us to think boldly, and consistently encouraged us to focus on technology’s potential for real public benefit. For those who have had the privilege of working with him, Ian has also been a warm, generous and uplifting presence who leads by example.

Beyond CIN, Ian has made significant contributions to Australia’s digital landscape. From establishing the NSW Data Analytics Centre as the inaugural NSW Government Chief Data Scientist, to his roles across national and international standards bodies, he has been a leading voice in responsible data use, digital identity, AI governance and technology for public good.

While Ian now steps away from his role as Director of CIN, we remain deeply grateful for everything he has shaped and supported during his time with us. His commitment to evidence-based thinking, collaboration and public value has left a strong foundation for CIN’s next chapter.

On behalf of everyone at CIN, thank you for your outstanding leadership and all you have contributed to our network. We wish you every success in this new chapter and look forward to seeing the impact you’ll make in your new role.
