Celebrating a Milestone: The Launch of WANFi Technology!

The Connectivity Innovation Network is proud to announce the launch of WANFI Technology, a startup founded by the lead researchers working on the CIN’s Rapidly Deployable Large Area Wi-Fi (LAWiFi) System.

From Pilot to Startup
The Rapidly Deployable Large Area Wi-Fi Project was one of CIN’s first two pilot initiatives, conceived during early problem-statement workshops. These workshops aimed to identify real-world connectivity challenges and inspire innovative solutions.

NSW Telco Authority played a pivotal role in this process, providing strategic direction, support and collaboration on these problem statements, ensuring the project targeted meaningful connectivity issues across NSW. This foundational support enabled the project team to develop a solution that bridges significant connectivity gaps in remote and underserved areas.

Led by the University of Sydney, in partnership with the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) and Pivotel Satellite, and with contributions from NBN and OneWeb, the project team successfully developed a rapidly deployable large-area Wi-Fi solution. This system surpasses commercial competitors and outperforms Wi-Fi mesh networks in deployment ease, reliability, coverage, and throughput.

This innovative Wi-Fi system has gone on to win State and National iAwards and a Telecommunications Disaster Resilience Innovation Grant.

Beyond a Milestone
The launch of WANFi Technology marks a significant milestone in CIN’s mission to drive connectivity innovation. While WANFi Technology is continuing a partnership between the research leads from the University of Sydney and UTS from the CIN’s LAWiFi project, it is a departure from the CIN’s original project, stepping into a new direction to reveal brand-new, cutting-edge antenna design and updated Wi-Fi protocols in a commercial grade product for enhanced wide area Wi-Fi performance.

Congratulations to Associate Professor Peiyuan Qin and Professor Yonghui Li from WANFi Technology!
