Secure Multi-Org Data-Sharing (SMODS) Platform finalist at the 2025 NSW iAwards!

We are proud to share that the Secure Multi-Organisational Data-Sharing (SMODS) platform has been named a finalist in the 2025 iAwards, under the Technology Platform category.

Developed by the University of Technology Sydney in consultation with World Data Exchange and supported by the Connectivity Innovation Network, SMODS is designed to transform how emergency services and government agencies share data — particularly multimedia content — in critical moments.

Why it matters

In emergency situations, real-time access to accurate data is essential for coordination, decision-making, and situational awareness. Traditional data-sharing systems often face challenges including latency, data silos, and privacy limitations, which can hinder rapid response. SMODS addresses these limitations by offering a practical and secure alternative.

What sets SMODS apart

SMODS is a decentralised, privacy-preserving platform that enables the secure exchange of multimedia data — such as live video feeds and images — across organisational boundaries. Importantly, it allows each agency to retain ownership and control of its information, while still supporting collaborative, real-time data sharing.

It is the first platform globally to implement the Australian Computer Society’s Data Sharing Framework and align with newly released international data standards, offering a secure and standards-based solution for cross-agency data interoperability.

Technology for public good

Built with a focus on public benefit, SMODS supports smarter, faster, and more coordinated responses to emergencies — ultimately helping to protect lives, infrastructure, and communities.
