16 June 2025: SES, TPG and UTS Network Sensing field demonstration

This event is a world-first field demonstration of our Network Sensing Technology and marks the successful completion of The Smart Flood and Storm Intelligence project led by the NSW State Emergency Service and the University of Technology Sydney, in partnership with TPG Telecom.

We will be joined by the Hon. Jihad Dib MP, Minister for Customer Service and Digital Government; Minister for Emergency Services, and Minister for Youth Justice. Minister Dib previously launched the TPG-UTS Network Sensing Lab in March 2024.

In addition to pioneering the application of integrated sensing and communications research for rainfall and water level sensing and building on the launch of the TPG-UTS Network Sensing Lab, the team have made incredible progress in utilising existing mobile networks to sense the environment around us. Not only is this a groundbreaking, world-first translation of research, leveraging existing mobile networks, it’s a green and sustainable way to sense the environment.

Without the need for physical sensors, this innovative sensing technology integrates seamlessly with a powerful digital twin to deliver highly accurate predictive intelligence and insights, significantly enhancing our ability to respond to natural disasters such as floods and flash floods. We are excited to share the game changing potential of this technology to protect infrastructure and save lives by mitigating the impact of natural disasters.

This significant milestone has been led by Distinguished Prof Jay Guo. We extend our congratulations to him and his team – Professor Andrew Zhang, Associate Professor Wenjing Jia, Dr Kai Wu and Dr Stanley Chen at UTS – as well as our collaborators: NSW SES’ Stephen McRobert and David Monk, and TPG Telecom’s Jeff Owen and Des Ward, along with their respective teams, for this remarkable achievement.
